The phrase "attention got captured" is not meant as blame. It gives a simple name to the moment, even when its causes are still hard to understand.
You can notice it in different ways: before the automatic reaction, right in the middle of it, or only afterward. Noticing late is still a trace: you begin to recognize a movement that used to pass unnoticed.
Sometimes attention is captured not by the situation itself, but by a hurt self-image: the desire to prove, justify yourself, restore being right, or defend the image of yourself.
